This robot's design addresses some of the issues we've encountered with other robotic vacuum and mop units, such as the brushes becoming entangled in hair, and the brush being unable to reach bare floors underneath furniture. The sweeping performance on carpets and bare floors is also impressive. The vacuum/mop has an excellent level of debris collection and the mop is able to quickly soak up flooring.

The mops also have a smart system to clean around the edges of furniture and around walls. The robot can handle the largest obstacles such as food bowls, toys, shoes, and backpacks with any issue. It is able to get tangled or entangled with smaller, flatter objects such as shoelaces, USB cable and pen.

We used this robot to clean and mop a variety of pile carpet tiles, FLOR carpet, and hardwood floors within an open, large floor plan. It was able to vacuum and mop the area of 90m2 in 170 minutes, with FREO Mind enabled. This is about average for Gen 4 robots.

Miele Scout RX3

Miele has a track record of quality and innovation in the world of robotic vacuuming. This new robot is designed to take the cleaning performance to a new level, with its innovative features.

The RX3 has a dual suction system, intelligent navigation with 3D mapping and a camera which sends live images to your smartphone for easy control. The RX3's powerful four-stage system offers excellent dust collection on hard and carpet floors. Side brushes that can be swung out, dual suction channels and easy-to-use controls keep corners clean. The 8.5 cm height means it can get under low furniture, while front cameras and infrared sensors aid it navigate obstacles and thresholds with ease.

The Scout RX3 impressed us in our test of how well it cleaned baking powder from baseboards and corners. Its suction of 2,500 Pa was a little weaker than other robots, however, it moved swiftly and was very quiet. It didn't mop, and its cleaning pad that was removable was a challenge to attach. It also was unable to handle dried-on dirt.

Its app isn't equipped with advanced features, such as multiple cleaning modes or automated scheduling. It does support Alexa however, its voice controls aren't particularly intuitive or responsive. It's also a bit flaky when it comes back to the charging station after an exercise. Other robots can follow an obstruction or follow an earlier route however, the RX3 stumbles around until it gives up.

Another issue we had was with its intelligent features, particularly the mapping function and digital keep-out zones. It was effective in keeping our furniture legs and shoes away, but it was easily caught on cables, socks, and carpets. We didn't include the Scout RX3 in our Best Buy list. Still, with a decent price and impressive performance it's a Scout RX3 is worth considering if you're looking for an alternative to traditional uprights.
